I can’t tell you how many times I meet someone and when I tell them I’m a dietitian they get this slightly horrified, deer-in-the-headlights look and say things like “oh, well I won’t be eating around YOU”. It’s like they’re expecting me to whip out a ruler and whap them on the hand if they reach for a cookie.
That’s not me.
Food philosophy principle #1: There are no “good” or “bad” foods
I’m not the food police, nor do I wish to be. For one, that sounds exhausting. And more importantly, food is fun, and should be enjoyed! Health and wellness is all about intuitive eating- aka, trusting and loving your body! To learn more about intuitive eating, click here!

I feel like my job is to dispel fear connected to food. Fear of food? Yes, FEAR. It’s part of our society, it’s part of our diet-obsessed culture, it’s part of the fat-phobic media, and it’s part of the health-first messages that bombard us.
What are your food fears?
- Here are some of the food fears I see most commonly:
- “Carbs make me fat.”
- “If I eat that, you’ll judge me” (translation: if I eat that I’ll judge myself”)
- “I have no idea what’s in that food.”
- “If I decide to care about my health, I can never eat anything that tastes good again”
- “If I eat that cheesecake, I will need to go run 5 miles to burn it off”
Food fears are started by dieting crazes, perpetuated by fear of being fat, and all too often they are ingrained by fear-fed headlines on “health” topics which are meant to get your attention more than they are to inform.
Step 1 to a truly healthy, happy life: don’t let fear run your life!
