What it’s about:
The title of this book lets the “cat out of the bag.” Body Kindness provides action-oriented tasks for cultivating kindness toward the body today, not five pounds from now. Rebecca Scritchfield is a non-diet dietitian that truly supports body positivity.
What is body positivity, you may wonder?
“Body positivity is a social movement rooted in the belief that all human beings should have a positive body image, while challenging the ways in which society presents and views the physical body.”
Wikipedia
It is a movement in response to people tired of body shaming from others and an expression of self-love. Body Positivity means learning to love your body and accepting it in all its forms throughout your life and the changes you go through. Psychology Today quotes Mallorie Dunn “It’s the understanding that your worth and what’s going on with you physically are two separate entities — that no matter what’s happening inside, outside, or to your body, you’re still just as worthwhile as the person next to you.” It means understanding that people have a lot more important things to do in their life, than obsessing over their body.
In her book, Scritchfield empowers readers through prompting gentle self-reflective inquiries to examine the interplay of physical and emotional health, values, and relationships. These questions can bring the reader out of their body insecurities and teach you how to be body positive and lead you to a point of body acceptance. Practical action steps are provided to develop self-compassion to extinguish shame. The book is divided into four parts:
- What You Do
- How You Feel
- Who You Are
- Where You Belong
The four-part set-up allows the reader to move through the book in bite-size pieces. Once you read the introduction, you can turn to the section you like. No need to read it cover to cover, although this is easy to do considering the authors playful and kind voice.
“Changing habits isn’t easy. But when your goals come from a place of kindness, you really can become your healthiest and happiest self.” -Rebeca Scritchfield, RDN
